Across the stations
AI Radio
The day on AI Radio focused heavily on understanding how large language models transfer knowledge, particularly through on-policy distillation. The study by Every Coin Has Two Sides showed that on-policy distillation transfers reasoning behavior rather than answers, finding that the origin relationship between teacher and student strongly dictates generalization across domains.
Other papers added breadth to this theme; for instance, Seeing Through the Chain proposed C3PO to mitigate hallucinations in multimodal models by filtering redundant reasoning tokens, while Tabular Foundation Models for Credit Risk Prediction reviewed how tabular foundation models use in-context learning to integrate prior knowledge from diverse datasets for tasks like credit risk prediction.
The remaining work explored specialized areas; Joint user-item allocation for e-commerce marketing campaigns formalized a joint task for optimizing user and item targeting across competing campaigns, while Classification of Microplastic Particles in Water using Polarized Light Scattering and Machine Learning Methods used deep learning with backscattering polarimetry to classify microplastics in water.
Astrophysics Radio
The day's work focuses heavily on understanding black hole binaries and using new astronomical data to probe cosmic structure. The study by hybrid evolution describes a method to compute the spin tilts of eccentric, precessing binary black holes at formation, showing that eccentricity significantly affects these tilts. This work is crucial for interpreting gravitational wave signals from such systems.
Other papers contribute to different areas of astrophysics; Magnetar Engines in Broad-lined Type Ic Supernovae models the lightcurves of supernovae using a magnetar engine, finding consistency across samples and proposing a unified framework for magnetar-powered supernovae. Cosmological Equivalence of Scalar-Tensor-Vector Modified Gravity and Cold Dark Matter explores how modified gravity theories can mimic the standard model for isotropic data, suggesting that dark matter might not be required based on certain observational constraints.
The remaining work adds context to different phenomena. Toward Bayesian photometric cosmic chronometers extends the cosmic chronometer method to photometric surveys, achieving a result for H(z=0.65) consistent with the Λ CDM model prediction at that redshift. Meanwhile, Kinematic cosmic dipole from a large sample of strong lenses proposes using strong gravitational lenses to measure the kinematic cosmic dipole, showing it can discriminate between CMB and source-number-count inferred values when combined with spectroscopic velocity dispersion data.
Genomics Radio
The work on Convex Analysis of Relaxation Dynamics in Chemical Reaction Networks and Generalized Gradient Flows focuses on finding bounds for the Kullback--Leibler divergence to equilibrium in mass-action chemical reaction networks with equilibrium. This method uses singular values, convexity parameters, and time-integrated activities to characterize trajectory-dependent bounds, which is useful for understanding slow relaxation in biological systems.
Other papers explore different areas of biological modeling. The work on Detecting absence: A dedicated prediction-error signal emerging in the auditory thalamus investigates how the brain detects sensory absence, finding that this relies on a prediction error dedicated to stimulus occurrence updates within the auditory thalamus and cortex. Another piece, Hodge-Decomposition of Brain Networks, decomposes brain networks into gradient, curl, and harmonic flows using Hodge decomposition to find statistically significant topological differences between male and female brain networks.
The work on Post-transcriptional Regulation of Stochastic Gene Expression Conditioned on Large Deviations develops a framework using the partitioning of Poisson arrivals (PPA) to map post-transcriptional regulation onto promoter-based models, creating a general way to analyze rare events in protein production rates. Together, these findings suggest different mechanisms are at play in sensory processing and gene expression control.
Quantum Radio
Today on Quantum Radio we focused on how to secure quantum key distribution by removing trust assumptions from the sender. The work on Transmitter-device-independent quantum key distribution proposed a practical protocol using faithful quantum steering to achieve a key rate of 410 bits per second over twenty-seven kilometers of spool fiber while maintaining strong loss tolerance.
Other papers covered various aspects of quantum physics, including how Pauli-Sparse regularised Counterdiabatic Shortcuts for Linear-Ramp QAOA addresses optimization for quantum algorithms and how Ultrafast Single Qubit Gates through Multi-Photon Transition Removal achieved high fidelity gates by removing higher-order transitions in superconducting qubits. These works show different ways to enhance gate speed and fidelity, focusing on different physical mechanisms.
The remaining papers explore diverse areas, such as the stabilization of quantum dynamics in dissipative systems with Dynamical magnetism in the disordered cubic lattice material gamma - Ba 3 CoNb 2 O 9 and the creation of synthetic quantum spaces with Quantum dynamics of microwave photons in synthetic frequency dimension. These studies investigate magnetic order and how to engineer artificial lattices for photon control, leaving open questions about the relationship between disorder and dynamical states in magnetic systems.
Security Radio
The day focused on clarifying what cryptographic agility means by reviewing existing definitions. The work on Toward a Common Understanding of Cryptographic Agility systematically categorized current concepts, establishing a canonical definition based on six distinct categories to guide future security efforts in evolving tech landscapes.
Other papers contributed different focuses. WebAgentGuard introduced a reasoning-driven guard model that uses GPT-5 training to detect prompt injection attacks in web agents, showing consistent outperformance against strong baselines without adding latency. LocalAlign also proposed a defense inspired by adversarial training, generating near-target adversarial examples to create a tighter robustness boundary around correct responses in LLM interactions.
These works address different threat vectors and concepts. Toward a Common Understanding of Cryptographic Agility sought conceptual clarity for security standards, while WebAgentGuard focused on practical defense against prompt injection in AI agents. A gap remains in how these abstract definitions interact with the concrete adversarial examples generated by methods like LocalAlign when applied to real-world agent behavior.
The day, in brief
Did you know that in the study of black holes, researchers are trying to figure out how to accurately describe systems where the black hole is both spinning and tilted? This isn't just theoretical; this spin tilt tells us about how those massive systems formed in the first place.
The challenge is that we often only measure this tilt when the system is in a very specific frequency band of gravitational-wave detectors. So, scientists have developed a hybrid evolution technique to compute these tilts at infinity. They use orbit-averaged evolution for high frequencies and then switch to precession-averaged evolution as the system evolves toward infinity. While this approach works reasonably well for eccentric systems, both the eccentricity and this hybrid method significantly impact those final tilts at infinity, with some results showing they are not good approximations of how these systems actually formed.
We also have some fascinating developments in astrophysics concerning supernovae. A study modeling supernovae powered by magnetars used fifty-six nickel decay to fit the lightcurves of eighty broad-lined type Ic supernovae. The key finding here is that all the data are consistent with this magnetar engine, suggesting a unified picture for these stripped-envelope events. This work establishes strong correlations between magnetic field strength and the period, pointing toward a common origin for these energetic explosions.
On another front, Euclid’s telescope is pushing the limits of what we can see in space. Researchers used low-resolution near-infrared spectra from the Euclid Deep Field North survey to identify thirty-three new ultracool dwarfs. These faint objects span spectral types M7 to T1 and cover distances between fifty and six hundred parsecs. This work validates Euclid's capability to characterize these faint stellar populations, setting a foundation for larger studies of ultracool dwarfs.
What’s perhaps even more counterintuitive is what happens when we look at quantum materials. In twisted bilayer cuprates, researchers have found that when the pairing involves both s-wave and d-wave components with specific relative phases—not just zero or pi—a state can spontaneously break time-reversal and four rotational symmetries. This leads to a topologically nontrivial phase. It suggests that these twisted cuprates might be a more robust platform for chiral topological superconductivity than we previously thought, opening up exciting new avenues in material design.
