The Morning Preprint

Monday 19 October

Showing the most recent batch — Monday 19 October. No papers have been ingested today yet.

1196 papers ingested by the estate's stations that day — about 9 minutes to read. The counts and the chart are the estate's own ingest, not arXiv's submission figures.

This day's harvest looks short: 1196 papers against a busiest day of 8455 in the week shown below. Weekends and a broken fetch look the same in the chart, and the chart counts the estate's ingest, not arXiv's.

AI Radio

158 papers today

The day focused heavily on optimizing large language model fine-tuning memory usage, with TACO proposing a new sparse optimizer that reduces optimizer state by 174 times compared to AdamW8bit while maintaining accuracy on OPT-13B models. This work demonstrated that TACO can fit 30-32B parameter models onto a single 80 GB GPU.

Other papers addressed diverse areas, including improving reasoning through Cross-Behavior Policy Optimization to unify offline and online data sources, and enhancing multimodal understanding with MHR-Router for vision-language models. Additionally, research explored robust sampling techniques like Robust Langevin Sampling and memory efficiency in diffusion models such as CacheScope.

Overall, the collection suggests a push toward resource efficiency in training large models while simultaneously improving complex reasoning capabilities across different modalities and environments. The central open question remains how to systematically attribute performance gains to higher-order information in complex learning structures.

Quantum Radio

6 papers today

The work on A rigid commensurate host and a defect that switches: vacancies in the frustrated alternating spin-(1, 1/2) Heisenberg chain explores how a vacancy alters the ground state of an alternating spin chain with frustrating coupling J 2. This study showed that removing a single site switched the system from a triplet to a singlet ground state when J 2 was set to zero point three zero six eight three. The singlet phase exhibited critical behavior where its gap closed as one over L, and its entanglement entropy grew logarithmically with a central charge of one point eight.

Other papers introduce different physical phenomena. Pt-induced semimetallic transport and enhanced thermoelectric response in the half-Heusler alloy YNi 0.5Pt 0.5Bi investigates how alloying YNiBi with Pt drives the material toward semimetallic transport, showing a low Hall carrier concentration of one point nine times ten to the power of nineteen cm to three hundred kelvin. Band-Resolved Superconducting Gaps via the Thermal Hall Effect in CeRu2 uses thermal Hall transport to assign pairing gaps in CeRu 2, determining that a low-field sign reversal places the larger gap on heavy Ce four f electron sheets.

The remaining studies focus on different aspects of quantum dynamics and materials science. Strain-enhanced superconductivity in RuO 2 thin films: Joint experimental and theoretical studies found that compressive strain along the [001] direction significantly enhanced the electron-phonon coupling strength, leading to a critical temperature of about two point zero kelvin in twenty point zero and thirty point zero nanometer films.

Robotics Radio

71 papers today

Today's work at Robotics Radio focuses on aligning data from human demonstrations to robot learning, particularly with KODA. This method converts egocentric RGB demonstrations into whole-body vision-language-action training data by synthesizing robot-view observations using a canonical trajectory. KODA improves success rates by forty five and forty six point two five percentage points on Unitree G1 tasks when using robot data held fixed against human demonstrations.

Other papers introduce various techniques to address different learning challenges. CQDC-Warp accelerates contact-rich manipulation trajectory optimization using a GPU-accelerated differentiable simulator, achieving seventy nine point eight percent success on the Allegro benchmark. MoCaP transforms passive human videos into mobile manipulation guidance by extracting spatial memory and cues for navigation and tool use.

The day leaves open whether explicit supervision targets, like those proposed in What Should Robot Policies Learn to Predict?, should be prioritized over action prediction during training. Furthermore, the application of learned memory structures described in Mem4Act suggests that explicit memory organization is crucial for long-horizon control tasks.

Security Radio

25 papers today

The day on Security Radio focused heavily on identifying thermal side-channel risks in autonomous vehicles, particularly how physical adversaries can use thermal infrared sensors to spoof perception systems. The work by Can Autonomous Vehicles Keep Their Cool? A Survey of Thermal Side-Channel and Perception Attacks systematizes these risks by comparing different attack mechanisms like thermal IR spoofing and unprivileged telemetry leakage across various privilege levels and timescales.

Other papers contributed to the landscape by exploring different facets of security challenges. Poisoning the Neighborhood details a topology-aware attack against RAG systems that exploits HNSW graph structures, while Does Client Diversity Protect the Lightning Network? Evidence from the 2026 Core Lightning Shutdown examined how client diversity affects blockchain network robustness under adversarial conditions. Furthermore, On the Robustness of Gossip Protocols in Modern Blockchains measured how different gossip mechanisms perform against realistic adversaries at large scales.

The day's collection highlights the tension between physical and software-level threats. Can Autonomous Vehicles Keep Their Cool? A Survey of Thermal Side-Channel and Perception Attacks frames the core issue of thermal integrity for AVs, while Benchmarking Post-Quantum Key Encapsulation in S3-Compatible Object Storage under Client Concurrency addresses future cryptographic needs for cloud storage.

The day on Security Radio

The day, in brief

Did you know that scientists are using highly structured methods to predict deterioration in intensive care units without losing the vital link between a warning and the specific patient signals causing it? This is thanks to a new framework called SepsisLens. Instead of just giving clinicians a single risk score, SepsisLens preserves variable-indexed temporal states until the point of risk composition. This means it lets doctors see exactly which organ dynamics are driving the warning, rather than just a generalized alarm.

This approach is revolutionary because many existing temporal models collapse these variable connections into one big patient risk number. SepsisLens keeps each variable's dynamics separate while sharing a temporal encoder for the overall trajectory. It enables the creation of a Structured Risk Head that composes multi-horizon risk from explicit organ and variable components, which is a massive step toward actionable clinical insight.

Shifting to the world of artificial intelligence, researchers are tackling how we can make those massive language models fit onto hardware without losing accuracy. The breakthrough comes from an optimizer called TACO. This method drastically cuts down on the memory needed for the optimizer state—by about 174 times compared to AdamW8bit—while keeping accuracy on large models like OPT-13B nearly identical.

This efficiency jump is huge because it allows researchers to fine-tune much bigger models. With TACO, you can now fine-tune 30 to 32 billion parameter models on a single eighty gigabyte GPU. This means training massive AI systems is becoming dramatically more feasible for smaller labs and practitioners, making the next generation of large language models accessible.

In physics, we're seeing how subtle structural changes can fundamentally alter physical properties in materials. Research into strain-enhanced superconductivity in RuO two thin films shows that applying specific compressive strain along a certain direction pushes electronic bands right toward the Fermi level. This action boosts electron-phonon coupling, which significantly increases the material's critical temperature for superconductivity—and this enhancement scales almost linearly with how much you apply that strain.

This demonstrates a direct, tunable link between mechanical stress and quantum behavior in condensed matter systems. It suggests that materials could be engineered to become superconductors simply by applying precise physical pressure.
