Abstract
This paper proposes a barrier control approach for the safe regulation of grid-following voltage-source-converters (VSC), operating in weak grid conditions. The proposed controller aims to enhance the transient performance and synchronization properties of the VSC, providing frequency and current limiting guarantees by employing smooth control barrier functions. First, a dynamic model is derived that includes the dynamic state interactions that are omitted in quasi-steady-state approaches, revealing the destabilizing elements both during transient and steady-state performance. Then, it is analytically proven that the proposed control law guarantees frequency limitation and inner current evolution in prescribed safety regions, while counteracting the destabilizing strong coupling between PCC voltage and injected current. In addition, sufficient conditions are formulated that guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system with respect to desired operating points. The theoretic results are verified in simulations of case studies operating in varying grid strength.
