Towards accurate extreme event likelihoods from diffusion model climate emulators
The authors used a diffusion model called cBottle to generate climate states and guided it to oversample Tropical Cyclones (TCs). They developed a method using importance sampling to accurately calculate the probability of obtaining these guided TC samples compared to an unguided model, quantifying how much guidance increases the likelihood of finding an extreme event.
