JOYS: Launch and destruction of dust in protostellar jets. The case of BHR71-IRS1 with JWST MIRI

JWST observations of BHR71-IRS1's outflow reveal dust is launched in a Class 0 jet and partially survives shock processing. Mid-infrared lines and thermal dust maps show refractory elements like iron are depleted in the gas phase, meaning they remain locked in dust grains despite the shocks. This provides direct evidence for dust launching from the inner disk at early star formation stages.
