Intergroup violence in bursts
The study used an Ising model to predict if intergroup violence occurs in sudden bursts or gradually. It found that whether violence bursts depends on the proportion of group members who cannot or do not want to contribute positively to the group's public good. This suggests that when agitation reaches a critical level, fighting breaks out suddenly rather than slowly.
