Pure single photons from a trapped atom source

Researchers created a tunable source of high-purity single photons using a single trapped ion at the focus of high numerical aperture lenses. This source produces pulses at 200 kHz with excellent purity, limited only by detector dark counts. The results show that these trapped ions are promising sources for scalable optical quantum networks and future quantum technologies.
