On Performance and Limitations of Quantum Wave Packet Dynamics Simulated using NISQ Hardware

The study simulates one-dimensional wave packet dynamics using NISQ hardware by encoding a continuous wave function onto qubits and evolving it via a split-operator method. While current hardware qualitatively reproduces small-qubit dynamics, accuracy degrades rapidly with system size on superconducting chips. Trapped-ion devices like IonQ Forte show superior agreement with classical benchmarks, highlighting the need for shallow, noise-robust circuits.
