Non-LTE Ionization Modeling for Helium and Strontium in Neutron Star Merger Ejecta

Researchers developed non-LTE models for Helium and Strontium ionization in AT2017gfo ejecta to explain a 1 µm spectral feature. The study found that about 1% of He or 1–10% of Sr mass fraction is present at high velocities. This supports BNS mergers as r-process sources under low electron fraction and entropy conditions.
