Move by Move: Measuring and Steering How LLMs Conduct Psychotherapy
This research introduces a ten-move ontology, based on clinical psychology, to measure and improve how Large Language Models conduct psychotherapy simulations. The study found LLMs over-rely on questioning and neglect psychoeducation but could be guided using this framework. Applying the ontology roughly halves the deviation from human behavior and improves alignment without needing model fine-tuning.
