Imperative Interference: Social Register Shapes Instruction Topology in Large Language Models
The study investigated how system prompt instructions interact differently in English versus Spanish based on whether they use an imperative mood or a declarative register. Findings show that imperatives create competitive instruction dynamics, while declarative statements cause cooperation. This suggests social register mediates how models follow commands, implying alignment training may be language-dependent.
