Optomechanical Detection of Individual Gas Collisions
Researchers used an optically trapped silica nanosphere to measure individual gas collisions by detecting momentum transfers. They found that observed collision rates accurately determine gas partial pressures, while the spectral shape reveals surface properties like temperature and thermal accommodation coefficient. This technique demonstrates precision force sensing and provides a new method for studying fundamental particle interactions.
