Intermodal quantum key distribution over an 18 km free-space channel with adaptive optics and room-temperature detectors

This study tested a quantum key distribution system over an 18 km free-space link connecting a remote transmitter to an urban station. By using adaptive optics, the system successfully coupled light into a standard fiber despite atmospheric turbulence. The results prove that this intermodal quantum network is viable and show room-temperature detectors can be used in QKD.
