Orientation selectivity properties for the affine Gaussian derivative and the affine Gabor models for visual receptive fields
This research theoretically analyzes how visual receptive fields, modeled by generalized Gaussian derivatives and affine Gabor models, select specific orientations. The study derived closed-form expressions for different field types—spatial, spatio-temporal, and velocity-adapted—showing that selectivity narrows as scale ratios increase or differentiation order rises. The findings help characterize cell complexity through specific mathematical measures.
