Weight Clustering Reveals the Importance of Relative Rank in Large Language Models

The study used scalar K-means clustering to replace billions of weight values with 16–64 shared values, achieving strong accuracy for LLMs like Llama 3.1 without retraining. Analysis showed that preserving the relative rank (which connection is stronger than another) of these cluster centroids is more critical for model performance than preserving their exact numerical magnitudes.
