The dawn of the first galaxies
ALMA2040 will transform understanding of early galaxy assembly by systematically surveying [C II] in first galaxies. It will detect and spatially resolve cold gas structures down to 100 pc scales in galaxies up to z ≈ 20, providing crucial diagnostics for physical conditions, metal enrichment timescales, and feedback processes during cosmic dawn.
