The role of friction on heave-induced motion of offshore drilling systems: modelling, analysis, and numerical experiments
The study modeled coupled hydraulic-structural drilling systems to see how friction affects motion caused by heave. Results show that while fluid dynamics dominate, structural movements are highly sensitive to distributed friction. Friction limits well-posedness but significantly impacts stability margins, highlighting its crucial role in controlling offshore drilling systems.
