Utilizing Information Theoretic Approach to Study Cochlear Neural Degeneration
The study used information theory to measure how much speech information is lost due to hidden hearing loss, specifically cochlear neural degeneration (CND). By comparing information transfer between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers under different speech conditions, the researchers found that rapid, time-compressed speech shows the largest information loss. This makes it an effective way to detect CND.
