How AI Writing Assistance Distorts Perceptions of AI Users and Their Opinions
The study found that AI writing assistance systematically distorts writer personas, making them seem more opinionated, competent, and positive while shifting their perceived demographics to privileged groups. Writers preferred this text despite knowing the distortions existed. These distortions persist even with human oversight and lead to consequential effects on reader trust and persuasion.
