Invading activity fronts or near-critical clusters may stabilize vulnerable excitable systems against stochastic trajectories terminating in an absorbing state

The authors show that coupling two regions—one robust and one vulnerable to extinction—stabilizes the vulnerable region by allowing activity influx from the stable patch across their interface. This influx reinvigorates the unstable area, preventing stochastic extinction events in finite systems and sustaining activity for long periods.
