Injecting Hallucinations in Autonomous Vehicles: A Component-Agnostic Safety Evaluation Framework

This research tests how false perceptions, termed 'hallucinations,' affect autonomous vehicle safety. Instead of testing specific hardware faults, it injects six types of perceptual errors into a simulation to see their impact on collisions and safety margins. The findings show that missed detections and blind regions are the most dangerous distortions for AV operation.
