A mathematical model of the vowel space
The paper attempts to link articulatory movements to speech sounds by simplifying complex vocal tract models into a generic generative function and a coordination function. This approach reduces the many-to-one problem between physical shapes and vowel sounds, showing that the coordination function optimally creates a one-to-one correspondence between articulatory parameters and vowel spaces.
