Probing ordered magnetic fields in galaxies across cosmic time

Recent ALMA observations of polarised dust emission have detected galactic-scale ordered magnetic fields in massive star-forming galaxies at high redshifts up to z ~ 5.6, suggesting these fields were already present early in cosmic history. This probes the growth of magnetic fields from weak seed fields into large-scale structures through dynamo action and turbulence.
