Credit Attribution in Timestamped Soccer Networks Using Multivariate Hawkes Processes
Traditional soccer statistics like assists are limited because they ignore complex passing sequences. This research uses multivariate Hawkes processes to model passes and shots as a continuous network, quantifying how each pass contributes to future actions. The resulting metric, Expected Goal Involvements (xGI), provides a more comprehensive measure of player contribution to goal-scoring opportunities.
