Analysis of Io's tidal response as a function of the properties of the partially molten layer

The study used Io's tidal deformation to map its interior structure by modeling how a partially molten layer affects tidal dissipation. By testing different melt depths and fusion heats, researchers found that a heterogeneous 'magmatic sponge' structure is required rather than a global magma ocean to match Juno observations.
