Oxygenation and spatial heterogeneity shape radiotherapy protocol ranking through phenotypic adaptation
The study developed a mathematical model to see how oxygen levels and tumor cell characteristics affect radiotherapy outcomes. It found that alternative treatment schedules are most beneficial under moderate hypoxia, where longer breaks between treatments help increase survival. Furthermore, the way oxygen is distributed spatially significantly changes treatment effectiveness, showing that geometry matters as much as the schedule itself.
