Metastable cosmic strings are broken at the start
The study shows that metastable cosmic strings break very early in the Universe, either due to finite-temperature effects or by interacting with pre-existing monopoles during network percolation. This early breaking means segments can be large and long-lived. To match NANOGrav observations, this requires monopole mass and string tension parameters to be significantly larger than previously estimated.
