On the Robustness of Gossip Protocols in Modern Blockchains

The study tested how gossip protocols in large blockchains handle attacks from malicious actors. It found that standard network structures used by Bitcoin, Polkadot, and Ethereum are often not robust enough against realistic threats to ensure all honest nodes receive necessary consensus messages for voting. The findings suggest that simple Erdős-Rényi random graphs with a high degree offer the best balance of security and performance.
