Robustness of the Verwey transition against remanent strain-induced defects in magnetite
Researchers studied how strain-induced defects from compressing magnetite affect its Verwey transition. They found that while uniaxial compression creates persistent line-like defects and strain fields, these extended structural changes do not measurably shift or broaden the transition temperature. This means extended slip-related defects do not strongly couple to the electronic ordering causing the Verwey transition.
