Researchers compared fractional-order viscoelastic models (FO-SLS) against integer-order models (3-parameter SLS and 5-parameter generalized Maxwell) for rendering materials like memory foam in haptic simulations. Using both physical fitting and human feedback, the study found that FO-SLS was perceived as significantly more realistic than all integer alternatives, proving its perceptual advantage.
