Tailoring magnetism of nanographenes via tip-controlled dehydrogenation
Researchers developed a method to precisely control magnetism in graphene nanostructures called nanographenes by selectively removing hydrogen atoms using an STM tip. This site-specific dehydrogenation alters the carbon's electronic structure by changing how its frontier orbitals interact with the gold substrate, allowing for exact engineering of the material's spin configuration.
