The gist The authors develop a general framework for topological charge-2ne superconductors by constructing these states via two complementary routes: by generalizing the Read–Green construction
In short
The authors develop a general framework to construct topological charge-2ne superconductors using two methods: generalizing Read-Green wavefunctions and breaking U(1) symmetry in fractional quantum Hall states. This framework reveals that higher-charge superconductivity supports richer topological phases than previously thought, including intrinsic fermionic non-Abelian order beyond charge-2e systems.
Key concepts
- Charge-$2ne$ Superconductors
- These are superconductors that condense clusters of more than two electrons, involving $2n$ electrons. They exhibit unique features like fractional flux quantization ($h/(2ne)$) and are explored for their strong correlation properties.
- Read-Green Wavefunction Generalization
- This construction involves modifying the standard Read-Green wavefunction by introducing pairing between every pair of electrons within the $2n$-electron cluster. This leads to specific edge conformal field theories, such as SU($2n$)$_{2n}$ WZW CFTs, which describe the system's low-energy physics.
- Non-Abelian Anyons and Vortices
- The framework shows that these superconductors can host deconfined non-Abelian anyons and non-Abelian superconducting vortices. These are exotic excitations whose properties are determined by the underlying topological order, providing new targets for experimental study.

Charge- 2ne superconductors condense clusters of more than two electrons, extending superconductivity beyond Cooper pairing. They exhibit distinctive signatures including fractional flux quantization h/(2ne) and are actively being explored in strongly correlated systems. We develop a general framework for constructing and characterizing topological charge- 2ne superconductors by combining wavefunction and field theory approaches. Generalizing the Read-Green wavefunction and Higgsing Read-Rezayi-type states yield two families that can support deconfined non-Abelian anyons and non-Abelian superconducting vortices. The first family also admits a construction from doping Jain states. Through Higgs theories, we find that the first and second families realize weak and intermediate clustering regimes, respectively, distinguished by the topology of vortices carrying flux greater than h/(2ne), while strong clustering yields a charge- 2ne superconductor without intrinsic topological order. These reveal that higher-charge superconductivity supports a richer hierarchy of topological phases beyond the Read-Green weak-strong pairing dichotomy, with distinct internal clustering structures giving rise to different topological structures at fixed condensate charge.

Kai: Hi, I'm Kai.
Mira: And I'm Mira, here with Lev.
Kai: We're looking at the paper: "Topological Charge-2ne Superconductivity and Clustering Hierarchy".
Mira: Here's the gist of the paper. The gist The authors develop a general framework for topological charge-2ne superconductors by constructing these states via two complementary routes: by generalizing the Read–Green construction from charge-2e ingredients, and by breaking the charge U(1) symmetry in certain fractional quantum Hall states, showing that they can host intrinsic fermionic non-Abelian topological orders beyond those of charge-2e topological superconductors.
Kai: General Framework and Construction Routes The paper constructs these states via two complementary routes: "by generalizing the Read–Green construction from charge-2e ingredients, and by breaking the charge U(1) symmetry in certain fractional quantum Hall states" (Page 1).
Mira: They derive corresponding edge conformal field theories and bulk topological quantum field theories from the constructed wavefunctions using bulk–edge correspondence (Page 1).
Kai: Construction via Read–Green Wavefunction Generalization The construction based on Read–Green ingredients involves generalizing the wavefunction by introducing pairing between each pair of electrons within the 2n-electron cluster, leading to a wavefunction defined as F(z1, · · ·, z2n) = Y i<j≤2n 1 zi − zj (Page 3).
Paper summary: Kai: The paper "Topological Charge-2ne Superconductivity and Clustering Hierarchy" sets out to develop a general framework for constructing these topological charge- 2ne superconductors <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. They show this can be done using two complementary routes: generalizing the Read–Green construction from charge- 2e ingredients, and by breaking the charge U(one) symmetry in certain fractional quantum Hall states <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Mira They derive corresponding edge conformal field theories and bulk topological quantum field theories from these constructed wavefunctions using bulk–edge correspondence. Kai For instance, the construction via Read–Green involves generalizing the wavefunction by introducing pairing between each pair of electrons within a 2n-electron cluster, leading to a wavefunction defined as F(z one z 2n) = product i<j 2n z i - z j three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Mira This leads to an edge CFT where the electron operator psi(z) has constraints such that "fusion results of q < 2n electron operators cannot contain the identity operator to prevent the charge- 2e instability" and "the electron operator should have half-odd integer conformal weight and be identified as the transparent fermion" three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Lev And they connect this to a specific CFT, like the SU(2n)WZW CFT, resulting in a U(2n)WZW spin CS theory with a chiral central charge c- = 2n - one/two and an action L CS 2neA = 2n times four pi tr a + two times three a three - one times four pi (tr a)d(tr a) - one/two pi (tr a)dA three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>.
Kai: The second construction route involves breaking the charge conservation symmetry from U(one) to Z(2n) in fractional quantum Hall states, specifically the 2n-cluster Read–Rezayi state three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Mira A direct attempt to remove the Laughlin–Jastrow factor fails because "the charge conservation symmetry is not broken" and there's a residual Hall conductance due to that factor in the third line of page three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Lev So, they have to modify the wavefunction, leading to something proportional to Q n q=one chi(q) product i one/(z i) three, which relates it back to a U(two) n 2n,-4n CS theory with a physical electron identified as the transparent fermion three.
Kai: The main result here is that charge- 2ne superconductivity isn't just a higher-charge analogue of conventional charge- 2e topological superconductors <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. It can support intrinsic fermionic non-Abelian topological order beyond those of charge- 2e ones, with deconfined bulk anyons and non-Abelian superconducting vortices three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Mira For n=one the theory reduces to the (p + ip) -wave topological superconductor with c- = one/two three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>.
Lev: And for n=two which is a charge- 4e superconductor constructed from generalizing Read–Green, Table I summarizes the anyon content, where "the superconducting vortices in this state have irrational quantum dimensions two + sqrt two and two + two sqrt two " three <ref:2512.21325#pg1>.
Conclusion: Kai: So we've looked at the paper "Topological Charge-2ne Superconductivity and Clustering Hierarchy" <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. The core finding is that higher charge superconductivity supports a richer hierarchy of topological phases beyond the Read-Green weak-strong pairing dichotomy. Mira It suggests that these different internal clustering structures give rise to different topological structures even when you fix the condensate charge. Kai And this framework implies concrete experimental diagnostics beyond just fractional flux quantization. Lev Specifically, "the bulk TQFT and edge CFT descriptions imply characteristic signatures in quasiparticle and vortex interferometry" seven <ref:2512.21325#pg1>.
Mira: The paper concludes that these non-Abelian anyons and superconducting vortices identified here suggest concrete targets for interferometric probes of the non-Abelian fusions. Kai It's about finding ways to distinguish these charge- 2ne superconductors from both conventional charge- 2e topological superconductors and nontopological charge- 2ne states <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Lev The paper provides a unified low-energy description by bridging ideas from fermionic symmetry-protected and symmetry-enriched topological orders, non-Abelian quantum Hall states, and unconventional superconductivity.
Kai: So the "Topological Charge- 2ne Superconductivity and Clustering Hierarchy" paper gives us a systematic way to study how adding more charge can introduce new types of topological order <ref:2512.21325#pg1>. Mira It opens up new avenues for experimentalists to look for those specific signatures in experiments involving quasiparticle or vortex interferometry. Lev It connects the theory directly to what it would take to run on real hardware by showing how these non-Abelian anyons and vortices would manifest in measurable quantities.
Kai: That's it for this discussion on the paper "Topological Charge-2ne Superconductivity and Clustering Hierarchy" <ref:2512.21325#pg1>.
